Tilford beat bottom-of-the-table Midhurst by 154 runs at the Green to record their eleventh win of the season. But before the match got underway, both sides assembled on the pitch to remember ex-Surrey and England player Graham Thorpe in a minute’s silence.
Midhurst’s captain Henry Lock, won the toss and put Tilford in to bat first. Despite an early wicket falling, Henry Clinton and 15-year old John Barran prospered well and had put on 71 runs before Clinton was caught for 28. However Ciaran Rooney joined Barron in another productive partnership of 113 with Rooney dismissed for 72 having hit 13 fours in his 66 ball innings as the total reached 194. Blake Weston then took a flurry of wickets including a hat trick with Mark Ramesar, Tilford’s skipper as one of his victims as well as Barran who made a mature 77 off 110 balls. But the home side ended their innings with a flurry of runs reaching 248-8 off their 45 overs with Weston recording 6-66 off his nine overs.
The Midhurst reply began badly as Huw Town-Jones took three early wickets to reduce the score to 28-3. Thereafter only Paddy Cowell offered much resistance before he was eighth out for 40 and the visitors were all out for 94 in the 26th over. Town-Jones took 3-29 and there were two wickets each for Nigel Martyn, Andy Hall Hall and Mike Braans.
With three Saturdays left in the season, Tilford travel to third placed Farncombe whilst Elstead, hot on the heels in second position, are at home to Chiddingfold.
