Tilford 1st XI Win At Chiddingfold

Philip Knight15 Jul 2024 - 11:49

2nd XI Rained Off 3rd XI Conceded

Tilford First XI beat Chiddingfold by 81 runs to record their ninth win of the season, the game only one of two to be unaffected by rain in other I’Anson Div 1 matches.

Tilford won the toss and decided to bat first but the home side claimed early success with Chiddingfold’s skipper Paul Hundley removing both openers. But Ciaran Rooney and Henry Marks repaired the damage and at the halfway stage the score had reached 91-2. Rooney holed out for 43 after a third wicket partnership of 99 but Matthew Cook joined Marks and they added another 73 runs. Marks eventually departed for a top score off 81 off 100 balls having hit eleven fours and one six but Cook and captain George Ellis added quick runs at the end of the innings, Cook making 41 and Ellis 33 not out. The innings was declared at 234-6 after 44 overs with Hundley taking three wickets and Alwyn Jordan two.

Chiddingfold’s reply did not start well with three wickets falling with the total on 22 and by the end of the 18th over the score had reached 50-5. However James Wood and Jack Benbough made a fine stand with Wood hitting out as he made 64 off 45 balls with six fours and four sixes. The pair had put on 89 before he was deceived by a slow ball and was caught in the covers, with Huw Town-Jones claiming his third wicket. From 139-5 the innings went into decline, the last five wickets fell for 14 runs with Ed Carlisle taking 3-15. Chiddingfold were all out for 153 in the 37th over as the rain held off.
