Tilford Win See-Saw Contest At Grayshott

Philip Knight6 Aug 2024 - 10:05

Tenth win of the season!

Tilford gained their tenth win the season at Grayshott in another see-saw contest for the leaders by the margin of four wickets. Skipper Ali Wheble won the toss for the home side and decided to bat first on a helpful wicket for the bowlers. The competition returned to the limited overs format of 45 for each side for the remainder of the season with four more matches to go from next week.

The Tilford bowlers had early success in reducing the Grayshott innings to 47-4 at the halfway stage and it was Nigel Martyn, the Surrey over 60’s veteran, who bowled a remarkable continuous spell of nine overs, seven maidens, two wickets for two runs. But the other bowlers sent down an excessive number of 47 leg side wides in a total of 58 extras which was to boost the final score by half. The fifth wicket partnership produced 60 between opener Wheble, who was finally caught behind for 28 off 118 balls, and Luke Parkinson who was bowled for 34 in the final over. The innings finished on 158-8 with Matt Bozier taking 3-48 and Huw Town-Jones picking up two victims.

In reply, Tilford started badly with wickets tumbling as the total limped to 57-6 with 14 year old William Edwards taking three wickets. But captain George Ellis was joined by Town-Jones and together they started to repair the innings with excellent running for quick singles. Frequent bowling changes failed to separate the two batsmen who offered no chances as the target was reached in the 40th over at 160-6 with Ellis making 51 and Town-Jones 40 in an unbroken stand of 103. Edwards ended with 3-35 and Aka Sachikonye took two wickets for Grayshott with a late finish to an absorbing day.
